Operating Systems

Operating systems: no computer will run without them

Whether it's a computer at home, a tablet on the go or a smartphone: no computer runs without an operating system. An operating system such as Windows is the basis for other programs to work on the computer at all. An operating system is like the command bridge: from there the memory (main memory, but also hard disk space) is managed, the processor is used and all peripheral devices are controlled.

Windows is the leader among the computer operating systems

If you disregard mobile devices such as smartphones, Windows is by far the market leader worldwide, only then does Apple come with its iOS or MacOS system. Microsoft's Windows operating system runs on 3 out of 4 desktop devices. If you include the smartphones and mobile devices on which the Android operating system predominantly runs, the distribution of the worldwide operating systems at the end of 2020 will be as follows:

  • Android: Approx. 40% market share
  • Windows: Approx. 32% market share
  • iOS: Approx. 16% market share
  • macOS: Approx. 7% market share
  • Chrome OS: Approx. 1% market share
  • Other / unknown: remainder approx. 3-4%

Since Windows is installed on approximately 75% of all desktop computers, today's students are very likely to come across this system later in their professional lives. It therefore makes perfect sense for students to study it in detail.

Operating system is the interface between hardware and software

The operating system is the interface between hardware and software in the computer. All operating systems consist of a kernel, which is responsible for managing the hardware, and programs that perform certain tasks when the computer is started, such as starting drivers.

Different Windows versions as the operating system

The majority of users worldwide are already using the latest version of Windows (Windows 10) as their operating system, but there are still thousands and thousands of computers on which older Windows operating systems are installed. As of the beginning of 2021, Windows operating systems were divided into:

  • Windows 10: approx. 78% of Windows users
  • Windows 7: Approx. 16% of Windows users
  • Windows 8.1: Approx. 4% of Windows users
  • Windows 8.0: Approx. 1% of Windows users
  • Windows XP: Approx. 0.7% of Windows users
  • Windows Vista: Approx. 0.3% of Windows users

Buying a new operating system doesn't have to be expensive

At some point, Windows inventor Microsoft will stop the updates and support for old operating systems, so it makes sense to install a newer operating system on the computer – provided the computer is sufficiently powerful. Software-Dreams.com also sells the newer Windows operating systems at low prices.

When to buy a new Windows version?

You can argue about whether you have to be one of the beta testers of a new Windows version to try out a program that still needs to be improved in one place or another. But at the latest, when a new Windows version is on the market for 1 year, you should deal with installing this new operating system version on your computer. In the meantime, this is no longer a daily task with Windows, but can usually be done in well under 30 minutes and then lasts for several years. If you want to buy Windows cheaply, you have come to the right place with the official, yet affordable versions of Software-Dream.com.

Differences between newer Windows operating systems

There is not only a Windows 10 version, but Microsoft provides the operating system in different versions, for example:

  • Windows 10 Education
  • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019
  • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016
  • Windows 10 Pro Workstation
  • Windows 10 Professional

The products differ not only in price, but also in the user target group: While LTSC and LTSB are primarily aimed at large companies for which security is an important requirement, Pro or Professional versions are aimed at users with particularly high demands. The education version is primarily intended for schoolchildren, students and teachers.
